A mass exodus to virtual worlds and online game environments

Economist Edward Castronova said, “We’re witnessing what amounts to no less than a mass exodus to virtual worlds and online game environments.”
So, if you’re wondering why gaming seems to be everywhere… I’ll tell you.
Gaming inspires four critical values in people:

  • Urgent Optimism: A sense of extreme self motivation, reasonable hope of success.
  • Social Fabric: We like people we play with better.
  • Blissful Productivity: We are happy working hard because we are doing something meaningful.
  • Epic Meaning: Humans love big stories, big objectives.

These are the same values that drive evolution and growth in society. It’s what cures disease and innovates new markets.
If you’re an advertiser, it’s also why gamification is the ultimate way to engage new audiences.

Spending for online advertising (up 18%) will outpace print ad spending for the first time ever, Outsell Inc. reports. While movies, TV, and radio spending dropped almost 4%, search engine pages were the biggest winners here, with a 39% increase in ad revenue.
But what happens when search is fueled by social activity? We may have some new big winners on the horizon - a la Facebook, Twitter, Zynga.
